Tips for the Pandemic – Making Your Own Products

Naturopath Australia • Aug 17, 2020

If this world of isolation that we’ve found ourselves living in for the past 4 months has taught us anything, it’s that we’ve all had to adjust to a completely new way of life.

With many people out of jobs and unable to leave their houses for different reasons, budgeting has become all-important, forcing us to make small sacrifices where needed to adapt and continue providing for ourselves as well as those we live with and love.

An old saying, “necessity is the mother of invention”, seems to ring true more than ever before!

So, with that said, it’s a good time to find various ways in which we can help ourselves out and enhance our lives and livelihoods without breaking the bank, and one way is by creating our own home remedies and recipes that we can use to boost our health and overall wellbeing during the pandemic.

The following simple recipes can be created at home, and do not involve items and ingredients that are hard to find or expensive to buy. The methods are also straightforward and can be prepared first thing in the morning or after the kids have gone to bed.

DIY Disinfectant Wipes

Strict hygiene and disinfection have become commonplace and part of our everyday lives since the pandemic started, which, naturally, led to shortages in hand-washes, sanitisers, wipes and other antibacterial products.

If you think about it, there is truly an endless list of things that need to be disinfected regularly if we want to protect ourselves and our families – trolleys, our phones, laptops and other devices, door handles, light switches, bags, gym equipment, bikes, reusable bottles, rubbish bins and more – and all of this constant cleaning can unknowingly get very expensive on a budget.

One way to save your money, as well as to adapt to the high demand online and in stores, is by creating your own disinfectant wipes to use at your disposal. It’s quick and simple, and teaching your children this skill will make them realise how many get used, and subsequently not to waste them!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/4 cup of vinegar
  • 8 drops of Teatree Oil
  • 10 drops of Eucalyptus Oil
  • 10 drops of Lemon Oil
  • 1 large Tupperware container or empty baby wipe container
  • 1 roll of paper towels

METHOD:

  1. cut the roll of paper towels in half and unfurl
  2. fold into a neat back and forth layered roll and place inside your container
  3. mix together water, vinegar, oils in a bowl and stir
  4. pour mixture over the paper towels, apply lid and set aside in a cool dry place

Wait a short while for the mixture to soak in and the disinfectant wipes will be ready to use for any needed application. If you require a larger quantity, simply double the ingredients listed above.

Peel Away the Day Face Mask

As busy, hardworking women we also want to look and feel our best even when we’re just at home with the family, yet it doesn’t mean we have to purchase expensive luxury products that might spoil our carefully laid out budgets.

For women at home as well as those heading off to the workplace daily, here is another simple recipe for an effective and organic peel-off face mask that you can create and apply instantly at home, which will help in fighting off blackheads, acne, skin pigmentation and more, while leaving your face feeling refreshed and rejuvenated each time.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
  • 5 drops of Peppermint Oil
  • 1 drop of Frankincense Oil
  • 1 tablespoon of gelatine
  • beauty brush (for application)

METHOD:

  1. bring a pot of water to the boil, remove from heat then add Peppermint Oil
  2. whisk in gelatine until all has dissolved
  3. while stirring continuously, add the Frankincense and turmeric until a smooth paste is formed
  4. allow cooling before use

Once cooled, carefully apply the mixture to your face using your beauty brush of choice, while avoiding the eyes and mouth. If you’d like to treat yourself and relax while the face mask works its magic, apply it before taking a soak in a hot tub enriched with 10 drops of Lavender Oil – an easy way to pamper yourself at home without having to spend at the spa.

Ideally, leave the face mask on for 15-20 minutes. Once it has dried, gently peel the mask off from the chin up, then rinse your face thoroughly with water before moisturising with any chosen product. This can be repeated weekly or as desired, with more noticeable results if done on a regular basis.
