Missionary Volunteers – Unsung Heroes

I have worked for 30 years as a Naturopath, and there are so many stories that come out of clinics.
Some that are heartbreaking, some that make you laugh and others that can make you just wonder at the strength of the human spirit.
Some of the patients that I have treated belong to that wonderful band of people that go to the third world countries to make life easier for the villagers that live in direst poverty without enough food, clean water, medicines, or decent clothing. These volunteers, because they often just get a pittance, and in some cases they even pay their own way to go and help change the world then live in muck and are often abused by the police and security forces of these countries. Many have been robbed of any cash, phones and even their clothes.
Yet still they stay because as they say “if we don’t nobody else will”.
By the time I get a chance to meet them, they are sick with malaria, dengue fever, and even parasitic infestations. Their health is at its lowest, with nasty skin rashes and many gastrointestinal problems. There are thousands of these unsung heroes in our midst that have paid a terrible price for their kindness to others.
