Australia’s Growing Asthma Problems

Localsearch WebServices • Jul 26, 2021

Asthma is becoming more and more common in our communities; the statistics are worrying.

In 2017-2018, 10% of Australian children between the ages of 0-14 years old were reported to have Asthma as a long-term condition.

Asthma prevalence is nearly twice as high in children with disabilities.

Overall, 2.7 million Australians have been diagnosed with Asthma.  We need to ask why in a country like ours, where we have good food, clean air and overall great living conditions, this can happen.

The world statistics are even more concerning.  The five countries with the highest rate of Asthma are:

  • Australia 21.5%,
  • Sweden 20.2%,
  • UK 18.2%,
  • Netherlands 15.3%,
  • Brazil 13.0%.

The countries with the lowest rates are:

  • Vietnam 1.0%
  • Bosnia Herzegoving 1.4%
  • China  1.4%

The low rates are surprising in those countries, as they are often shown with fog filled cities where one cannot see in front of them, where in our country the sky is blue and clear.

In the above countries exercises like martial arts are encouraged and the breathing exercises of Tai Chi and Yoga are practised by young and old alike in the public parks.

So again, we have to look at why this is happening.

Do our children eat too many sweets?  Are they taking too many prescribed medications with some of the recognised side-effects?

Are they playing games inside for too long and not getting enough exercise?

As a nation we have a tendency to shallow breathe, not expand our lungs fully.  If we continue to do this for a reasonable time the lower lobes of the Lungs can start to close up and breed bacteria.  This is a possibility that can begin to start our journey on road to Adult Asthma.

So, we should begin the most important journey of our life:

Learn to breathe in the oxygen, hold it in for a certain period.  Exhale it and the greatest secret of all is to do without the breath for a period of time.  The longer you can exercise to be without breathing in, the stronger your Lungs will become.  For more tips on breathing exercises “The Power of the Breath” eBook is available in our online shop.
